Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows faces eligibility decision on Troy Jackson's Senate candidacy
Maine Democratic nominee Graham Platner withdrew from the U.S. Senate race after allegations surfaced. The state Democratic Party convened a special meeting and selected State Senator Troy Jackson as the replacement candidate. Republican state Representative James White filed a letter with Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, arguing that Maine law bars a candidate from running for more than one state or federal office in the same election cycle, and that Jackson, who previously sought the governor’s nomination, is therefore ineligible.
Bellows has received a formal request to rule on the challenge, but as of the latest reports she has not issued a decision. The deadline for the party to name a replacement has passed, the nomination of Jackson has proceeded, and no court has yet blocked his placement on the ballot. The matter may still be resolved through an administrative ruling or litigation.
