Maine Senate race: Troy Jackson targets women voters as write-ins file

The Maine Senate race is seeing increased activity as Democratic candidate Troy Jackson intensifies efforts to secure support from women and reproductive rights advocates. Jackson is attempting to distinguish himself from Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins, who identifies as a pro-choice Republican. To bolster his campaign, Jackson has announced the formation of the ‘Women for Troy’ coalition, involving hundreds of women across 16 Maine counties, and has launched television advertisements featuring his mother, Colleen McBreairty.

Adding complexity to the November general election, six individuals have filed to run as write-in candidates against both Collins and Jackson. These candidates include Brent Andrews, Sigrid Ann Olson, Gina Oswald, Joseph Steinberger, Mike Turcotte, and Ashley Webb. The surge in write-in filings follows a period of political transition for the Democratic Party after primary winner Graham Platner withdrew from the race following allegations of misconduct.

While Republican critics have targeted Jackson’s past associations, Jackson is focusing on clarifying his stance on women’s rights to appeal to a critical demographic of voters. The election remains a key contest in Maine, with voters weighing issues such as healthcare costs, housing, and reproductive freedom.
