Major US Poll Shows Strong Desire to End War with Iran

A CBS News/YouGov poll of 2,193 American adults conducted 22‑24 July 2026 found that 67 % want an immediate end to the war with Iran. Respondents view the conflict as worsening, with only about a quarter saying it matches expectations. Uncertainty (58 %) and frustration (57 %) are the dominant feelings.

Most Americans (86 %) cite opening the Strait of Hormuz and securing oil supplies as the top U.S. objective, while 79 % prioritize the freedom and safety of Iranians, 76 % want a permanent halt to Iran’s nuclear program, and 72 % seek to prevent Tehran from threatening other nations. About 40 % believe the United States has a military advantage, 22 % favor Iran, and 38 % see no clear superiority.

Only 39 % approve of U.S. military action against Iran, with 61 % opposing it. Expectation of a prolonged conflict is common: 37 % anticipate months, 21 % years, and just 9 % weeks. Among Democrats, 92 % support ending the war, compared with 30 % of Republicans; support for continuing operations is low overall (33 %).
