Makassar abuse scandal sees DPR deputy demand maximum punishment for alleged rapist

Deputy Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives Sari Yuliati condemned the case of a 60‑year‑old man identified only as MD, accused of raping 32 elementary‑school students in Makassar, South Sulawesi. She urged law‑enforcement agencies to investigate the case thoroughly and to impose the harshest possible sentence, stating, “The state must act decisively, punish the perpetrator to the fullest extent and ensure complete justice and recovery for the victims.”

Yuliati also called for comprehensive victim support, including psychological counselling, health services and restitution. Police in Makassar have detained MD as a suspect since July 17, 2026, after parents reported the abuse, which allegedly occurred when children bought snacks at his stall. Initially three victims were reported, but the number later rose to 32. The city’s social‑assistance agency, UPTD PPA Pemkot Makassar, is providing assistance to the children.

The deputy’s statements were made on July 20, 2026, highlighting the seriousness of the alleged sexual violence and demanding a swift and severe legal response.
