Makassar, Indonesia fire destroys up to 80 homes in dense settlement

On the early morning of 31 July 2026, a fire broke out in a densely populated settlement on Jalan Sultan Abdullah II in the Tallo district of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The blaze quickly spread through closely built houses, fueled by strong winds.

Authorities estimate that between 50 and 80 houses were consumed. The cause is believed to be an electrical short circuit in one of the homes. Dozens of fire‑engine units were dispatched, and after more than three hours the fire was extinguished.

The local disaster agency, BPBD Kota Makassar, led the response and began an assessment. Head of BPBD Muhammad Fadli Tahar said initial data indicated about 90 households were affected, with verification ongoing.
