Pakistan warns Iran as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia threaten Mecca Pact
Following a series of Houthi missile and drone strikes on southern Saudi Arabian cities—including Abha, Jizan, Najran, and Khamis Mushait—that wounded at least 73 people, Pakistan has signaled that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement could be activated. The pact, signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, stipulates that an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all three.
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that the agreement would become operational if unprovoked aggression or the Yemen conflict spills into Saudi territory. While some Pakistani sources suggest Islamabad is weighing potential airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, such as in Saada, other officials have clarified that any military involvement would be strictly limited to defending Saudi territory and would not involve combat operations inside Yemen.
In a diplomatic effort to prevent further escalation, Pakistan has reportedly conveyed a warning to Iran, urging Tehran to restrain its Houthi allies. While an Iranian official stated that Iran does not control the Houthis, other reports suggest the IRGC has provided coordination support in Yemen. The escalation threatens regional stability and global energy supplies as the conflict intensifies.
