Greece reports fatal house fire and multiple regional wildfires
Several tragic incidents and fires have been reported across Greece. In Phthiotis, a 32-year-old woman and her pet dog died in a house fire in Vitoli, Makrakomi, during the early hours of Wednesday. Neighbors discovered the woman unconscious; investigators believe she died of asphyxiation from thick smoke rather than burns. The fire, which occurred in a residential extension, caused near-total destruction of the structure. Authorities are investigating whether the fire was caused by cooking or other factors.
Other recent fire incidents include a blaze in Limogardi, Phthiotis, which prompted a large response from the Fire Service, including ground crews, drones, and aircraft. Additionally, a fire involving low vegetation was reported in the Filiates region of Thesprotia.
In a separate incident at Mount Athos, a 52-year-old excavator operator died after his machinery veered off a cliff near the Iviron Monastery. Emergency services recovered the man, but he was pronounced dead after being transported to the Karves Health Center.
