Malawi brings home more than 21,000 nationals from South Africa

The Malawian government has repatriated over 21,000 of its citizens from South Africa, surpassing its original target of 15,000. The operation, coordinated by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs with support from the South African government, private companies and development partners, has cost about 7 billion Malawian kwacha, of which the Malawian state contributed 5 billion kwacha and partners 2 billion. Buses provided by South Africa and additional transport arranged by local partners have been used to bring the returnees to Lilongwe. While the target has been exceeded, officials say thousands of Malawians remain stranded and will be brought home in the coming weeks.
