Malawi faces corruption allegations and economic crisis

Malawi is facing political and economic scrutiny as government officials and opposition leaders clash over corruption allegations and a deepening financial crisis.

Agriculture Minister Roza Fatchi Mbilizi is at the center of a procurement scandal involving a lucrative fertiliser supply contract. Allegations suggest Mbilizi lobbied for a single-source deal with United Capital Fertilizer Zambia without a competitive tender. Concerns regarding conflicts of interest have been raised because the minister’s cousin, Hyde Khembo, sits on the board of the state grain trader SFFRFM. The Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority has reportedly refused to approve the contract, insisting on an open tender process.

Simultaneously, opposition leader Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement has criticized President Peter Mutharika’s administration for failing to address a severe foreign-exchange crisis. Kabambe warned that the economy is struggling with a shortage of currency, noting that commercial banks are unable to liquidate significant amounts of unpaid Letters of Credit. He also dismissed recent improvements in inflation figures as potentially fleeting, cautioning that seasonal pressures could reverse any economic gains.
