Malawi governance and economic instability

Malawi is experiencing a period of institutional and economic instability characterized by governance disputes and corruption allegations.

Initially, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) faced scrutiny over leadership and operational issues. Under Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, the commission dealt with disputes regarding official travel and reported police interference at Kamuzu International Airport. Tensions also arose concerning the commission’s independence, including a standoff with the government over the relocation of a Lilongwe warehouse.

Following these institutional challenges, the country faced further political and economic scrutiny. Agriculture Minister Roza Fatchi Mbilizi became the subject of a procurement scandal involving allegations of lobbying for a single-source fertiliser contract without a competitive tender. This raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest involving the state grain trader SFFRFM.

Concurrently, the administration has faced criticism from opposition leaders regarding a severe foreign-exchange crisis. Reports indicate that a shortage of currency has left commercial banks unable to liquidate significant amounts of unpaid Letters of Credit, while concerns persist regarding the sustainability of recent inflation improvements.
