Malawi government disburses K85.5 billion for CDF projects

The Malawi government has disbursed K85.5 billion under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to 30 of the country’s 36 local councils. This funding is intended to allow contractors to mobilize resources for various community projects, including roads, classrooms, and health posts.

Six councils—Blantyre City, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Kasungu, Mulanje, and Nsanje—have not yet received funding due to incomplete procurement processes. Isaac Jomo Osman, president of Malawi Local Government Authorities, noted that councils are following thorough procedures to ensure the large-scale projects are managed correctly.

In addition to the CDF, the September release includes K5.4 billion for project management and K2.8 billion for sports, creative arts, and innovation. Other recent disbursements include K17.1 billion for school bursaries in August and K15 billion for youth and women loans in April. Parliament’s Local Authorities and Rural Development Committee has indicated it will conduct oversight exercises to verify that the funds reach the intended councils and projects.
