Malawi political landscape faces scrutiny one year into Mutharika presidency

One year after Peter Mutharika returned to power in Malawi, the political landscape remains volatile. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration is facing internal and external pressures, including scrutiny over government deals and the role of political figures.

Jane Ansah, Mutharika’s running mate, has reportedly been sidelined from official duties and Cabinet meetings despite maintaining a cordial relationship with the President. Meanwhile, former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority CEO Collins Magalasi was recently granted bail following charges including hacking the President’s phone and involvement in the acquisition of the Amaryllis Hotel.

On the opposition side, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has faced criticism for failing to provide a credible alternative to the current government. The party recently issued an apology to its former alliance partners, an act some observers view as political pretense rather than genuine change. Additionally, the Speaker of the National Assembly has announced the formation of 12 joint committees to investigate alleged shady deals within government institutions.
