Malawi political and economic scrutiny under Mutharika

One year into President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is facing significant political and economic scrutiny in Malawi.

Initial criticisms focused on economic performance and political disillusionment. Opposition leader Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) highlighted rising costs for food, fuel, and electricity, alongside foreign exchange shortages and concerns that national debt could rise from K24 trillion to over K40 trillion. Grassroots supporters also expressed frustration regarding the party’s transition into governance.

As the situation progressed, political volatility increased. Reports emerged that running mate Jane Ansah has been sidelined from official duties and Cabinet meetings. Legal and investigative pressures have also mounted, including the bail of former energy regulator Collins Magalasi following charges related to hacking the President’s phone. Additionally, the Speaker of the National Assembly announced the formation of 12 joint committees to investigate alleged shady deals within government institutions, while the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) faced criticism for failing to offer a credible alternative to the DPP.
