Malawi President Peter Mutharika faces scrutiny over extended South Africa trip
Malawi’s government has addressed public speculation regarding President Peter Mutharika’s extended stay in South Africa, asserting that the 86-year-old leader is in good health and on a private visit. Information Minister Shadric Namalomba stated that while the trip has taken “slightly more time than usual,” there is no cause for concern and the President will return “when the time comes.”
The President’s absence has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, including the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who have raised concerns about a potential leadership vacuum. Amidst national challenges such as fuel shortages, electricity blackouts, medicine scarcities, and a foreign-currency crisis, opposition figures have called on Vice-President Jane Ansah to address the nation to provide reassurance.
While the government maintains that the President remains in charge regardless of his location, the lack of a public itinerary or a confirmed return date has intensified scrutiny over the administration's handling of urgent national matters.
