Malawi repatriation from South Africa eases, migrant dies on bus

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs reported that the number of Malawians waiting at Musina Repatriation Camp in South Africa's Limpopo Province fell from about 2,000 to fewer than 1,000 as buses continued to transport returnees. Over 30,000 people have been repatriated since the camp opened in late June, but around 3,000 Malawians remain stranded and anti‑migrant groups plan further protests.

A Malawian migrant died on a bus travelling from Musina to the Beitbridge Border Post after the bus left the camp. The Department of Home Affairs said the passenger felt ill, collapsed, and died en route; the cause of death has not been established. The driver turned the bus around and returned it to the centre.

Malawian officials have appealed for additional funding and personnel to manage the ongoing repatriation operation, which also receives support from private donors and South African authorities.
