Malawi urges US and UK to boost investment and climate finance
President Arthur Peter Mutharika reaffirmed Malawi’s long‑standing partnership with the United States and urged Washington to increase private‑sector investment in agriculture, mining, education and health, saying such support would create jobs and accelerate the country’s development agenda.
The United Kingdom announced that future assistance will focus on investment, climate finance and economic reform. Acting British High Commissioner Ben Nicholson said “the future UK‑Malawi partnership is one of collaboration, investment and shared ambition,” noting that UK‑attributable multilateral support totals £40‑50 million a year and will back projects such as the 365 MW Mpatamanga Hydropower scheme. The statement came after the UK confirmed a 90 % cut to its direct aid budget for Malawi, shifting resources toward multilateral channels, private philanthropy and climate‑resilience initiatives.
