Malawi aid cuts and investment push
Entities: Joseph Mwanamvekha · World Bank · Malawi · United States · United Kingdom
Overview
In mid‑July 2026 Malawi’s president called on the United States and United Kingdom to deepen private‑sector investment in agriculture, mining, education and health, and to expand climate‑finance support. The UK responded by outlining a new partnership focused on investment, climate finance and economic reform, while noting a shift from direct aid to multilateral channels and private philanthropy.
A week later both donors announced steep reductions in bilateral assistance. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office cut its direct aid by 60% for the 2026/27 fiscal year, warning that the cut could rise to 90% by 2028/29. The United States ended about $230 million in active USAID contracts, jeopardising health and education programmes. Malawi’s finance minister cited increased support from the World Bank and African Development Bank and referenced a US pledge of roughly $900 million under its Global Health Strategy, while emphasizing the need for greater self‑reliance.
