Malawi's DPP faces criticism one year into Mutharika presidency

One year after the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) returned to power in Malawi, the administration of President Arthur Peter Mutharika faces criticism regarding both political loyalty and economic performance.

Political commentators have noted growing frustration among grassroots activists and online supporters who campaigned for Mutharika’s 2025 victory. These figures, who helped secure a decisive win with 56.75 percent of the vote, are reportedly feeling disillusioned as the party transitions into governance.

Simultaneously, United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Dalitso Kabambe has criticized the government’s first-year performance. Kabambe cited ongoing economic hardships, including high costs for food, fuel, and electricity, as well as persistent foreign exchange shortages. He warned that the national debt, inherited at approximately K24 trillion, could exceed K40 trillion without significant intervention. Kabambe argued that the administration has yet to meet public expectations regarding employment, medicine access, and fiscal management.
