Malaysia Airlines mandates drug testing for 1,260 pilots

Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) has mandated drug testing for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots following the arrest of a co-pilot at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia. The co-pilot, 39-year-old Mohd Saufi bin Othman, was detained on July 28 after authorities discovered 26 kilograms of ecstasy and other drugs in his luggage.

MAG stated that the first phase of mandatory testing is underway and expected to conclude by August 15. Pilots who fail to comply with the testing deadline will be barred from operating flights. The group also plans to extend these rigorous checks to active pilots at its other subsidiary airlines and eventually to cabin crew members.

In response to the incident, Malaysian Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has proposed that flight crews be required to report for duty up to two hours early to undergo enhanced security screenings. He emphasized the need for proactive prevention to protect the aviation sector's image and international tourist confidence.
