Overview

Indonesian customs detained Malaysia Airlines second officer Mohd Saufi bin Othman at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport on 28 July 2026 after X-ray screening revealed approximately 70,000 MDMA (ecstasy) tablets weighing roughly 25-26 kg, along with methamphetamine. Toxicology confirmed the 39-year-old pilot had used MDMA, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Authorities stated he acted as a courier for an international syndicate, receiving approximately RM50,000 (≈US$12,000). Investigators noted this was his third smuggling attempt. During his arrest, officers also seized a bottle of clean urine, which he allegedly intended to use to evade drug testing.

In response, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) CEO Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar described the incident as “completely unacceptable” and initiated a rapid safety response. MAG mandated drug screening for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots by 15 August 2026; those failing to comply will be barred from flying. This program is intended to expand to all active pilots and cabin crew across MAG subsidiaries, including Firefly and Amal.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called for mandatory, stricter pre-duty drug screening, proposing that crews report for duty 1.5 to 2 hours before shifts to protect international tourist confidence. Additionally, the Malaysian government is preparing to present improved standard operating procedures (SOP) for airport scanning to the Cabinet. Proposed enhancements, supported by Ministers Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, include reviewing scanning machine scope and improving coordination between aviation security (AVSEC) and border control agencies.

To further combat substance abuse, MAG and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the Drug-Free Workplace (TEKAD) program across MAG facilities.
