Malaysia Airlines pilot detained in Jakarta with 70,000 ecstasy pills
A Malaysia Airlines pilot was arrested at Jakarta’s Soekarno‑Hatta International Airport after a baggage scan revealed roughly 26 kg of ecstasy tablets – about 70,114 pills – and four grams of methamphetamine concealed in his luggage. Officers also seized a small bottle of clean urine that the pilot is alleged to have carried to evade a drug test. Subsequent toxicology showed the pilot tested positive for methamphetamine, MDMA (ecstasy) and cocaine, and he admitted the flight was his third drug‑smuggling run, for which he was promised payment of around US$12,000.
Indonesian authorities, which can impose the death penalty for large‑scale drug trafficking, have opened a criminal investigation and released CCTV footage of the arrest. Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Authority has launched a regulatory review of airport security procedures, while the Malaysian Border Control Agency (AKPS) says the pilot passed standard screening at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Indonesian police have also identified a KLIA staff member suspected of assisting the pilot. Parallel investigations are ongoing in both countries to determine the extent of the trafficking network.
