Malaysia allocates RM20 million for paddy soil fertility
The Malaysian government has allocated RM20 million in the 2026 Budget to supply foliar fertilizer and soil fertility materials to enhance paddy production. This initiative aims to improve soil health, increase farmer income, and ensure national food security.
The implementation will involve the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA), the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA), and the Kerian Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA Kerian). This move follows a MADA soil profile study conducted between 2019 and 2022, which revealed that 22 percent, or 21,917 hectares, of paddy land was less fertile. Additionally, 60,650 hectares of land were found to be acidic, with pH levels below 5.0, hindering nutrient absorption.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu emphasized that the allocation is a strategic investment rather than a mere expense. He also addressed concerns regarding the increasing involvement of foreign workers in the paddy sector, urging Bumiputera farmers to maintain control over the industry to protect the nation's staple food supply.
