Malaysia agricultural fertilizer and soil management

Overview

The Malaysian government has addressed challenges regarding fertilizer availability and soil health to protect national food security. Initially, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security investigated significant delays in fertilizer supplies following a tender process. These delays resulted in crop yield losses for farmers, leading the government to terminate an agreement with a company that failed to meet delivery specifications. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission began an investigation into the matter to determine if any wrongdoing occurred.

Subsequently, the government allocated RM20 million in the 2026 Budget to supply foliar fertilizer and soil fertility materials. This initiative, implemented through agencies such as MADA, KADA, and IADA Kerian, aims to address soil degradation. Studies conducted between 2019 and 2022 indicated that a significant portion of paddy land was less fertile or acidic, hindering nutrient absorption. Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu described the allocation as a strategic investment to improve soil health and farmer income.
