Malaysia authorities seize tonnes of subsidized cooking oil in raids
Malaysian authorities have conducted several raids targeting syndicates involved in the misuse of subsidized cooking oil. In Selangor, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), in collaboration with the Central Region Marine Police, uncovered a scheme in Port Klang where subsidized one-kilogram oil packets were being emptied and mixed with used cooking oil. This mixture was reportedly stored in special tanks to be resold to processing companies or through black markets. Approximately 15,900kg of oil was seized, with a total value estimated at RM133,950. One Myanmar national was detained during the operation.
In Penang, a separate operation known as Ops Tiris 4.0 led to the seizure of 6.4 tonnes of subsidized cooking oil at a store in Nibong Tebal. Officers recovered 900kg of one-kilogram packets and 5,500kg of oil stored in bulk containers, along with various pumping equipment. Three individuals, including one local and two foreign nationals, were detained. This follows a similar raid in Penaga earlier in the month, where goods worth approximately RM65,450 were seized. The investigations are being conducted under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and anti-money laundering regulations.
