Malaysian subsidized goods smuggling enforcement
Overview
Malaysian authorities have conducted multiple enforcement operations to combat the illegal diversion and smuggling of subsidized goods, specifically cooking oil and diesel.
In mid-October, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Marine Police Force carried out raids in Kelantan and Sabah. These operations resulted in the seizure of over 4.1 metric tons of subsidized cooking oil and 18,060 liters of subsidized diesel, with total seized values exceeding RM660,000. Several suspects were detained or fled during these incidents.
By late October, enforcement expanded to Selangor and Penang. In Port Klang, authorities uncovered a scheme where subsidized one-kilogram oil packets were emptied and mixed with used oil for resale, leading to the seizure of approximately 15,900kg of oil. In Penang, ‘Ops Tiris 4.0’ resulted in the seizure of 6.4 tonnes of subsidized cooking oil. These investigations are being conducted under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and anti-money laundering regulations.
