Palestinian displacement and Thai protests against Israel
The United Nations Human Rights Office has reported that Israeli forces forcibly displaced more than 33,000 Palestinians from three refugee camps in the occupied West Bank—Jenin, Nur Shams, and Tulkarm—during early 2025. The report notes significant destruction, with approximately 52 percent of buildings in Jenin and 48 percent in Nur Shams damaged or destroyed. The UN warned that these systematic displacements could constitute crimes against humanity.
In response to the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, the Malaysian government has issued strong condemnations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) and the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) characterized the forced removals and settlement expansions as violations of international law. Malaysia has urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action to protect Palestinian lives and ensure accountability for war crimes.
Separately, tensions have risen in Thailand regarding Israeli nationals. Protesters in Bangkok, led by Sondhi Limthongkul, demonstrated outside the Israeli Embassy to demand stricter oversight of foreign property ownership and to protest the behavior of Israeli tourists. The Thai government has summoned the Israeli Ambassador to address concerns over cultural respect and has implemented new, streamlined deportation procedures for foreign nationals who violate local laws.
