Malaysia economic outlook shows growth in leading sectors

Malaysia's economy is projected to continue expanding, driven by a 2.2 percent increase in the Leading Index (LI) in August 2026. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the LI rose to 115.9 points, supported significantly by an 18.7 percent increase in real semiconductor imports. This growth reflects strong global demand for technology components, particularly those required for artificial intelligence (AI).

In the financial sector, Malaysia maintains its position as a global leader in Islamic finance, outperforming 139 other countries according to the 2026 Islamic Financial Development Indicator (IFDI) report. The Islamic capital market reached RM2.7 trillion by the end of 2025, accounting for approximately 64 percent of the nation's total capital market. Additionally, Islamic banking financing represented about 48 percent of total financing in Malaysia in 2025.

International investor confidence remains high, evidenced by a US$1.5 billion Malaysian global sukuk issuance in July, which saw an oversubscription of 4.7 times, totaling over US$9.5 billion in orders.
