Malaysia economic growth and investment trends
Overview
Malaysia has demonstrated economic resilience and growth despite global geopolitical uncertainty and trade tensions. Early reports highlighted strong investment momentum, particularly in high-value sectors like manufacturing and semiconductors. Net foreign direct investment rose by 41.6% in 2025, a trend that continued into the first half of 2026 with approved investments increasing by 11.7% year-on-year.
Building on this momentum, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected a 5.2 percent GDP growth for Malaysia in 2026, though it noted growth may moderate to 4.7 percent in 2027. This expansion is driven by significant technology-related exports and substantial investment in data centers. The nation’s data center operational capacity has exceeded 1,000 megawatts, with an additional 1,500 megawatts currently under construction.
By the third quarter of 2026, the economy showed continued strength with a 5.3 percent GDP expansion, exceeding expectations. This was largely supported by a 5.4 percent expansion in the services sector. For the first nine months of 2026, the economy grew by 5.5 percent, surpassing the 4.8 percent recorded during the same period in 2025. Total trade reached RM2.91 trillion from January to September 2026, a 30.1 percent year-on-year increase, resulting in a trade surplus of RM232.38 billion. Growth was fueled by electrical and electronic (E&E) products, driven by global demand for semiconductors and artificial intelligence investments.
Recent indicators suggest continued expansion, with the Leading Index rising 2.2 percent in August 2026 to 115.9 points, bolstered by an 18.7 percent increase in real semiconductor imports. Furthermore, Malaysia maintains a leading global position in Islamic finance; the Islamic capital market reached RM2.7 trillion by the end of 2025, and a US$1.5 billion global sukuk issuance in July saw orders totaling over US$9.5 billion.
