Malaysia’s economy grew by 6.0% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, exceeding the consensus estimate of 5.8% and accelerating from 5.4% in the first quarter. This performance is driven by a dual engine of manufacturing, which grew by 7.3%, and services, which expanded by 5.9%. Strong demand for electrical and electronics (E&E) products, particularly those related to artificial intelligence and global technology expansion, has bolstered export growth.

Domestic demand remains a key pillar, contributing 3.7 percentage points to the quarterly growth, with private consumption adding 2.9 percentage points. Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Dato’ Sri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour noted that the economy remains on firm footing, suggesting full-year 2026 growth could reach the upper bound of the official 4% to 5% forecast range. Malaysia Building Society Berhad has since upgraded its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 5.1%.

On the equity market, Bursa Malaysia is expected to trade within a narrow range, with investors focusing on technology, utilities, and industrial sectors. While the economic outlook is positive, analysts caution that growth remains vulnerable to geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and inflationary pressures.
