Malaysia GDP growth accelerates in H1 2026
Overview
Malaysia’s economic momentum has strengthened, with second-quarter 2026 growth reaching 6%, an acceleration from the 5.4% recorded in the first quarter. This performance exceeded the official advance estimate of 5.8% and the 4.4% growth seen during the same period in 2025. Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Dato’ Sri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour noted the economy remains on ‘firm footing’, suggesting full-year growth could reach the upper bound of the official 4% to 5% forecast range. Consequently, Malaysia Building Society Berhad upgraded its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 5.1%.
Growth is primarily driven by a dual engine of manufacturing (up 7.3%) and services (up 5.9%), fueled by robust demand for electrical and electronics (E&E) products and semiconductors linked to artificial intelligence. This is reflected in the Leading Index, which grew 1.3% in June 2026, supported by a 35.1% surge in real imports of precious and non-ferrous metals and a 14.2% increase in semiconductor imports.
Trade performance has reached record levels, with total trade for the first seven months of 2026 hitting RM2.16 trillion, a 24.7% year-on-year increase. Exports rose 29.2% to RM1.165 trillion, resulting in a trade surplus that more than doubled to RM170.5 billion. July marked the 75th consecutive month of a trade surplus. The Malaysian Ringgit has shown resilience, outperforming several other Asian currencies against the US Dollar. While indicators remain strong, analysts caution that growth remains vulnerable to geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and inflationary pressures.
