Malaysia EV Charger Shortfall Prompts Push for 30,000 Stations by 2030

Malaysia had 6,416 public electric‑vehicle charging points by the end of May 2026 – 2,143 DC fast chargers and 4,273 AC units – well below the National Energy Transition Roadmap target of 10,000 chargers by the end of 2025. In a parliamentary response, deputy MITI minister Sim Tze Tzin said the government remains committed to a longer‑term goal of 30,000 public chargers by 2030. To achieve this, the ministry is accelerating approvals through a 14‑day planning guideline, expanding power substations in partnership with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and working with charging‑point operators on new incentives. The National EV Task Force is also monitoring progress and fostering collaborations between local firms, OEMs and global technology providers to strengthen the domestic EV supply chain, including batteries and advanced driver‑assistance systems.
