Malaysia expands RM600 monthly aid for seniors, pledges help for Sarawak elder in Johor

The Malaysian government, through the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), provides a monthly RM600 cash assistance to senior citizens aged 60 and above who have no income and meet poverty‑line criteria. The aid, automatic for some beneficiaries and requiring applications for others, is part of a broader package that also includes up to RM200 from other agencies such as LHDN and JPAB. Many seniors remain unaware of their eligibility and miss the payments.

In a recent incident, a video showed an elderly man of Sarawak origin living in impoverished conditions in Johor after suffering a stroke. Deputy Minister Nancy Shukri confirmed that the government will coordinate with JKM Johor and Rumah Sarawak to arrange suitable accommodation or repatriate the elder to Sarawak, should he wish to return. Authorities are gathering fuller details on his health and support needs, emphasizing community responsibility for the welfare of vulnerable seniors.
