Overview

In early July 2026 Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expanded cash‑assistance programmes, allowing eligible families to receive up to RM1,800 through the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) schemes. The rollout emphasized direct transfers, low fuel prices, higher civil‑servant and police salaries, and major development projects such as the Johor‑Singapore Special Economic Zone and the RTS Link.

A few days later the government announced banking reforms to ease household expenses and support micro, small and medium enterprises, including a Basic Credit Card capped at 14 % interest, removal of a RM1 ATM‑withdrawal fee at over 14,000 machines, temporary loan‑payment deferrals and a RM5 billion SME Stabilisation Fund.

On 19 July the Department of Social Welfare expanded a monthly RM600 cash assistance for low‑income seniors, with additional support from other agencies. The administration highlighted many seniors remain unaware of eligibility.

Later in July the government signalled a further increase to the SARA cash‑aid programme. Officials indicated an extra roughly RM100 per month could be added for low‑income households, the elderly and those with health challenges, though the precise amount and implementation date were not disclosed. The proposal forms part of the broader “MADANI” agenda to strengthen the social safety net amid rising living costs.
