Malaysia F1 economic impact study requested by experts
Experts are calling for an in-depth study to evaluate the economic impact of the recent Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix held in Sepang, which reportedly generated RM950 million in economic activity. Youth and Sports Minister Taufik Johari announced that the event attracted 261,000 spectators, including over 50,000 foreign visitors, resulting in a total economic contribution of approximately US$232 million.
Economist Yeah Kim Leng and tourism management expert Hafiz Hanafiah emphasized that the true economic benefit depends on spending by foreign visitors. Hanafiah noted that domestic spending may simply redistribute existing funds within the Malaysian economy rather than providing a net increase. Experts suggest that determining the specific proportion of revenue derived from international travelers is essential before the government decides to make the event a regular fixture.
