Economic impact of Formula 1 at Sepang
Overview
The Formula 1 Grand Prix held at the Sepang International Circuit initially drew controversy regarding high food and beverage costs. Reports indicated prices such as RM50 for chicken rice and RM25 to RM30 for various drinks, alongside high vendor rental rates reaching up to RM29,975. To mitigate this, the Litar Rasa Madani initiative supported 40 local micro-entrepreneurs who generated RM555,000 in sales without being charged site rental or sales commissions.
Following the event, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Steven Sim Chee Keong reported that the Grand Prix generated an estimated RM345 million in economic spillover for Malaysian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The event attracted 261,000 spectators, with nearly half expected to be foreign tourists, driving significant activity in the accommodation, retail, transportation, and food and beverage sectors. Minister Sim noted that spectators were projected to spend 2.17 times more than during typical events, largely due to the higher spending levels of foreign tourists.
Subsequent reports from Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari indicated the economic impact reached nearly RM950 million. Data from Formula One Management showed the event reached a global audience of over 827 million viewers. Notably, the Bahrain International Circuit bore the hosting rights costs, allowing Malaysia to benefit economically without high licensing fees. A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis is currently being conducted by the Sepang International Circuit and a consultancy firm to inform future government decisions regarding hosting Formula 1 races.
In response to these figures, experts including economist Yeah Kim Leng and tourism management expert Hafiz Hanafiah have called for an in-depth study to evaluate the true economic benefit. They emphasized that the net impact depends on foreign visitor spending, noting that domestic spending may merely redistribute existing funds within the Malaysian economy rather than providing a net increase.
