Malaysia maintains non‑recognition of Myanmar junta while keeping ASEAN dialogue open
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan affirmed that Malaysia has never recognised the military junta that took power in Myanmar after the staged elections in December. The Malaysian delegation’s visit to Myanmar in May was not a de‑facto endorsement but a move to keep ASEAN communication channels active, as mandated by the bloc’s 48th summit.
Hasan stressed that Malaysia’s stance does not affect its commitment to the ASEAN‑wide Five‑Point Consensus (5PC) on a cease‑fire, inclusive dialogue and humanitarian assistance. He noted ongoing informal engagement with more than 30 Myanmar stakeholders and announced another round of talks scheduled for early‑mid July. The approach is intended to prevent Myanmar’s isolation, avoid a vacuum that could be exploited by external forces, and support ASEAN’s role in mediating peace.
Malaysia will chair ASEAN in 2025, and officials say the country will continue to push for an end to violence, implementation of the 5PC, and delivery of aid to the Myanmar population.
