Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urges cabinet unity, warns ministers to resign if they attack rivals during state elections

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned Malaysian ministers, deputy ministers and federal agency heads that they must not use ongoing state election campaigns as a platform to attack one another. He said any officeholder who does so should step down from their federal position, emphasizing the need for unity, discipline and professionalism during the Negeri Sembilan state election.

Barisan Nasional deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan said he was not offended by the warning, describing it as typical election‑season practice, and added that he would resign from the cabinet if the prime minister ordered him to. Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil clarified that Anwar has not issued any direct resignation orders, stating that the reminder was intended to preserve federal cohesion, investor confidence and stability.

The Prime Minister’s remarks were reiterated in a Tamil‑language interview, where he stressed that federal officeholders must respect each other despite electoral competition and that any breach of this principle could trigger a resignation requirement.
