Malaysia ranked as world's best retirement destination for 2026

Malaysia has been named the world's best retirement destination for 2026 according to the Global Relocation Index compiled by Rumavi. Scoring 75.8 out of 100, Malaysia placed first among 192 countries and territories evaluated. Panama followed in second place, while Portugal ranked third.

Southeast Asia showed strong regional performance, with Thailand and the Philippines also appearing in the top 10. Malaysia's top ranking was driven by its relatively affordable cost of living, access to healthcare, and financial advantages for retirees, including a high score for the treatment of foreign income. The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program was also noted as a key relocation pathway.

The index evaluated nations based on 24 metrics across four pillars: financial and tax, livability and health, security and stability, and ease of settlement. While Malaysia excelled in affordability, the report noted that road safety and law enforcement remain areas for potential attention. The study also highlighted that the availability of specialized retirement visas is a critical factor in distinguishing top-tier destinations from those where expatriates must rely on less stable visa arrangements.
