Malaysia records record June trade surplus of RM340.9 bn as Q2 GDP rises 5.8%

Malaysia’s trade data for June 2026 showed a new monthly high, with total trade value reaching RM340.9 billion, a 44.7% increase from the previous month. The trade surplus expanded 64.9% to RM14.9 billion, marking the 74th consecutive month of surplus since May 2020. Exports rose 45.4% to RM177.9 billion, while imports grew 43.9% to RM163.0 billion. Major export destinations were the United States (RM18.1 billion), Singapore (RM8.1 billion), China (RM5.4 billion), Taiwan, the European Union, Japan and Thailand. Imports were led by China (RM15.8 billion), Singapore, South Korea, the United States, Taiwan, India and the EU.

Preliminary GDP estimates for the second quarter of 2026 indicate a 5.8% annualised growth rate, beating the prior‑quarter’s 5.4% and surpassing the median 5.2% forecast from Bloomberg. The expansion was driven primarily by the services sector (+5.4%), manufacturing (+7.5%), mining and quarrying (+10.2%) and construction (+6.6%). The Finance Ministry noted the resilience of the economy amid global oil price spikes and supply‑chain disruptions.
