Malaysia urges EV charging expansion amid infrastructure shortfall
Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the government has offered import‑duty and excise‑duty exemptions for electric vehicles, generating about RM3.3 billion in revenue over the past four years, but public charging infrastructure has not kept pace. He warned that without a complete ecosystem, the EV market cannot be led forward.
The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) reported that, as of 31 May 2026, Malaysia has installed 6,416 public EV charging units – 2,143 DC fast chargers (33.4 %) and 4,273 AC chargers (66.6 %). About 96 % of these are on Peninsular Malaysia, with 208 in Sarawak and 32 in Sabah. The government does not control charging prices; rates are set by station operators, though they must meet safety and technical standards.
Johari emphasized that the government will not advance the EV market without sufficient public chargers and aims for charging times of 20–30 minutes rather than several hours. Foreign investment is expected to bring technology transfer, strengthen local vendors and create jobs. Integrated development is overseen by the National EV Taskforce chaired by MITI and the EV Steering Committee chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister.
