Malaysia reports surge in dengue fever cases and deaths

Dengue fever cases in Malaysia have surged, with the national total reaching 58,079 as of mid-August, representing a 56.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The Ministry of Health reported 55 deaths related to dengue complications during this period.

The outbreak is heavily concentrated in the Klang Valley, specifically affecting Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya. Selangor recorded the highest volume of infections with 25,090 cases, a 61 percent increase. In Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, cases rose by 106 percent. Other significant increases were noted in Perlis, which saw a 207 percent rise, and Johor, which saw a 109 percent rise.

Health officials attributed the spike to unpredictable weather patterns, where rainfall combined with hot temperatures create ideal breeding environments for the Aedes mosquito. The ministry has implemented intensified prevention measures, including vector control and early case detection, which have shown positive results in the Klang Valley, though the national risk remains high.
