Malaysia seeks status of 55 citizens missing in Nepal and China disasters

Fifty-five Malaysian citizens remain uncontactable following devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and China. The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, known as Wisma Putra, stated that efforts to establish the status of each individual are ongoing.

The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) recently concluded its field deployment in Nepal. During the mission, the team conducted ground searches and aerial drone surveillance in accessible areas. As part of Malaysia's support for local disaster response, SMART provided drone operation training to Nepalese rescuers and donated nine drones to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan noted that the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating with the Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Law to clarify the status of the missing. Mobile phone pings for some of the individuals have been identified in heavily affected zones. Authorities are also urging next of kin to provide documentation to facilitate official verification, which is necessary for legal and insurance purposes. In Nepal, death certificates for missing persons can only be issued after a three-year period.
