Malaysia strengthens defense and maritime cooperation with Cambodia and Vietnam

Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin conducted a series of official visits to Cambodia and Vietnam in early August, meeting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Seiha, as well as Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hung and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phan Văn Giang. The talks focused on deepening bilateral defence ties, with plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation by the end of the year. Areas of collaboration highlighted include technical military exchanges, humanitarian assistance, medical support, maritime security, search‑and‑rescue operations, intelligence sharing, and joint training programmes.

Both sides also discussed broader ASEAN security challenges such as cyber threats, artificial‑intelligence‑driven warfare, supply‑chain disruptions and the situation in the South China Sea. Malaysia proposed establishing a high‑level committee to coordinate these initiatives and emphasized the need for a resilient collective security framework within ASEAN.
