Malaysia-Vietnam defence cooperation

Overview

In early August 2026, Malaysia’s defence minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin visited Hanoi and renewed the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation with Vietnam. The updated MoU highlighted joint work on maritime security, capability development, technology, cyber threats, artificial intelligence and grey‑zone activities, and underscored a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.

Two days later, Nordin expanded the outreach with a visit to Cambodia before returning to Vietnam. The talks broadened to include plans for a new defence‑cooperation MoU to be signed by year‑end, and proposals for a high‑level committee to coordinate technical exchanges, humanitarian assistance, search‑and‑rescue, intelligence sharing and joint training. Both meetings addressed wider ASEAN security challenges, such as cyber threats, AI‑driven warfare, supply‑chain disruptions and tensions in the South China Sea, signalling Malaysia’s push for deeper bilateral ties and a more resilient collective security framework in Southeast Asia.
