Malaysia targets growth via halal economy and Islamic tourism

Malaysia is positioned to strengthen its economic growth through the expansion of the halal economy and Islamic tourism. Experts suggest that empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) via the halal ecosystem can help local entrepreneurs penetrate international markets.

Dr. Zaharuddin Abd Rahman of Elzar Shariah Solutions & Advisory Sdn Bhd noted that while local products have high potential, many entrepreneurs face financial constraints regarding halal certification. He proposed that JAKIM could implement a phased assistance mechanism to help businesses obtain certification without lowering standards, thereby improving cash flow and enabling global expansion.

Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi highlighted Malaysia’s significant potential in the growing Islamic tourism sector. Speaking at the World Islamic Tourism and Trade Expo (WITEX) 2026, he noted that Malaysia can offer diverse year-round Islamic travel packages, including specialized cruise activities. He also observed that geopolitical conflicts in West Asia have increased tourism flows toward Southeast Asia, presenting a strategic opportunity for Malaysia to attract more Muslim travelers.
