Malaysia halal economy and Islamic tourism development

Malaysia is pursuing economic growth through the expansion of its halal industry and Islamic tourism sectors.

Initially, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that several nations, including Vietnam, China, Brazil, South Africa, Peru, and Ethiopia, have expressed interest in collaborating with Malaysia on halal industry development. These countries are reportedly seeking partnerships for halal certification and recognition, utilizing Malaysia’s system as a global benchmark.

Following this, discussions shifted toward domestic economic empowerment and tourism. Experts suggested that supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through the halal ecosystem could help local entrepreneurs reach international markets, though financial constraints regarding certification remain a challenge. Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi noted Malaysia’s potential in Islamic tourism, observing that geopolitical conflicts in West Asia have increased tourism flows toward Southeast Asia, creating a strategic opportunity for the nation.
