Malaysia launches new generation MyKad with enhanced security

The Malaysian National Registration Department (JPN) has launched the new generation of MyKad, beginning a phased rollout on September 17, 2026. The upgraded identity card features 53 security measures, an increase from the previous 23, to combat identity theft, cloning, and document manipulation.

Key technical enhancements include the use of high-durability polycarbonate material, a dual-interface chip located on the back, a transparent window, and a QR code. Security features such as laser-etched personal details, 3D dynamic holograms, and complex guilloche patterns have been integrated to prevent tampering. The physical design also shifts the owner's photo to the left side of the card.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail advised citizens not to rush to replace their current cards, as existing MyKads remain valid and all linked records will be retained. The phased implementation is intended to prevent congestion at NRD offices. While 40 specific JPN branches nationwide offer same-day printing and collection, applications at other branches may take at least five working days to process.
