Malaysia MyKad security upgrade rollout

Overview

The Malaysian National Registration Department (JPN) has initiated a phased rollout of a new generation MyKad identity card. The upgraded cards feature 53 security measures, up from the previous 23, to mitigate identity theft, cloning, and document manipulation. Technical improvements include the use of high-durability polycarbonate, a dual-interface chip, a transparent window, and a QR code.

Following the launch, officials clarified that the transition will not impact the receipt of government aid or subsidies, such as the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) program. Because eligibility and balances are stored in centralized systems rather than on the physical card, the MyKad functions only as a verification medium.

Notably, Touch ’n Go functionality is no longer integrated into the MyKad; users must now utilize the Touch ’n Go eWallet or a separate card. While existing cards remain valid, certain older versions require updates. To manage the rollout, 40 JPN branches offer same-day printing, while other locations may require at least five working days for processing.
