Malaysia urges OIC to impose sanctions and boycotts against Israel

At an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Malaysia has called for more decisive collective action against Israel regarding the situation in Palestine. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan urged OIC member states to implement integrated measures, including embargos, boycotts, and sanctions, to pressure the Israeli regime.

Mohamad emphasized the need for a systematic approach, specifically suggesting sanctions on the delivery of weapons used in the conflict. He also called for coordination between the OIC and the Arab League to ensure a unified voice ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Beyond sanctions, Malaysia highlighted the necessity of ensuring a ceasefire and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, such as food and medicine, to Gaza, noting that much aid remains stuck at the Rafah crossing. Additionally, the meeting saw the appointment of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed from Mauritania as the new OIC Secretary-General.
