Severe flash floods and landslides in the mountainous border regions of Nepal and Tibet, China, have resulted in a massive humanitarian crisis. As of late August 2026, reports indicate at least 579 to 584 deaths, with the number of missing persons estimated between 1,924 and 2,482. The disaster has heavily impacted the Trishuli and Nuwakot districts, destroying infrastructure including over 40 bridges and 40km of roads.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) estimates that approximately 93,000 people require urgent assistance. Among the missing are at least 517 to 537 foreigners from over 30 countries. Search and rescue operations, led by the Nepal Army and supported by international agencies like the UN, face significant challenges due to thick mud, destroyed communication networks, and the risk of natural lakes overflowing.

In response, the Malaysian government is coordinating aid and considering the deployment of its Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team (SMART) and military personnel. Malaysia is also working to verify the status of approximately 57 citizens reported missing in the affected areas.
